How To Prepare for the End of YouTube Custom Gadgets

Google has announced that YouTube will no longer accept requests for new gadgets or gadget refreshes as of April 1, 2015, and all gadgets will be removed on December 31, 2015.

The announcement is not very surprising, given YouTube’s continual move towards standardization across devices, a major miss in the past, as anyone trying to view a brand channel on a mobile device already knows.

While there is time before the changes take place, it does require some planning.

Here are 5 considerations to help you prepare for the transition:

  1. If your current contract with your custom gadget tech provider expires BEFORE april 1st, your “custom” tab will not be visible to the public after April 1st.
  2. If your current contract with your custom gadget tech provider expires AFTER April 1st, your current “custom” tab will remain visible to the public until December 31st, as long as your contract with that tech provider is still valid.
  3. Your videos and their usage history will NOT disappear. Because you upload videos through the standard Video Manager tool on YouTube before pulling it in to the custom gadget environment, your videos will still be visible in the “videos” tab with all the other videos on your channel.
  4. NOW is the time to start making plans for the transition. Consider updating the “home” tab to add important videos to existing playlists, adding or rearranging playlists and shelves to showcase recent and recent videos, and updating the “hero” video. Once the “custom” tab goes away, you’ll need to set the default landing experience to another tab, such as the “home” tab.
  5. Lastly, third party tech providers do offer other options to replace this custom functionality. Now might be the time to consider integration with other CMS systems or existing client publishing tools currently being used with their other social platforms. It’s important to remember that there is a reason YouTube is moving away from custom gadgets, and embrace YouTube’s standard functionality.
